Welcome to How to Be Lucky!
Join me on the journey to becoming lucky
I’m on a journey to become lucky – to feel that I have a luck-filled life – and I’d love for you to join me.
I haven’t always felt lucky.
My family went through a very difficult few years, where both my parents and my adult children endured some serious life-events.
It felt like every time the phone rang, it was bad news.
Once my family members were doing better, I realized that I’d fallen into a funk.
I had trouble believing good things were in my future.
It seemed all the best things were behind me.
Building Luck
In an effort to move forward, I began to research how to flourish and I completed an Applied Positive Psychology certificate.
During that program, the homework touched on the work of Richard Wiseman, who authored the book The Luck Factor.
The Luck Factor talks about four traits that lucky people have in common:
They create and notice chance opportunities.
They make lucky decisions with intuition.
They create self-fulfilling prophecies via positive expectations.
They have a resilient attitude.
All of these things are skills that can be learned, meaning all of us can learn to be lucky!
I was floored when I realized this. Our class didn’t linger on the topic, but I knew that I would. I did my final project on the topic of luck to earn my certification, and also published a six part series in another email newsletter I write.
Since then, I’ve gone deeper into researching the topic of luck, along with related topics – things like awareness, spirituality, acceptance, belief, goal setting, positivity, post-traumatic growth and more.
I’ve even added two additional components to Wiseman’s original framework:
Building right-brain awareness
Cultivating positivity
What a lucky life means to me
To me, having a luck-filled life doesn’t mean winning the lottery. It means a general feeling that things work out in my life.
That my life is filled with good things and good people.
That I have some agency to move toward what I want and that those things come to me too.
That I’m filled with gratitude.
And when things get hard and tough and life doesn’t go as planned, I have resilience skills and good relationships with others to get me through, along with a belief that there’s more good to be experienced.
This isn’t about Pollyanna optimism (although that may be deeper than we realize), but instead a deep, abiding belief in the goodness all around us.
Join me on this journey to become lucky!
I want to continue moving forward on this lucky journey and I’d love to have you come with me.
I’ll be sharing what I’m learning about luck and the experiments I’ve been running in my life. I can’t wait to learn more along with you.
